The Fall of Gondolin
"The Fall of Gondolin" by J.R.R. Tolkien Photo: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

"The Fall of Gondolin," — the 3rd part of the J.R.R. Tolkien not bad trilogy of tales of the Elder Days — is now available in bookstores.

This elementary judgement should be a cracking please to Tolkien readers the globe over. Newly published Tolkien material in 2018, from The Professor, who died in September, 1972, is astounding. Adding to the astonishing treasure is that son Christopher Tolkien, wrote just a twelvemonth ago in "Beren and Luthien" that:

"In my ninety-third yr this is (presumptively) my last book in the long series of editions of my male parent'southward writings."

Readers and fans may feel gratitude that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote plenty and kept plenty notes to continue to supply content close to fifty years after his death and that his son continues to accept the will and ability in his elder years to collect, fix and produce further content.

I wish I could thank him in person. Nosotros are living in the decade when Tolkien's writings are more prolific, available and recognized than ever before.

It was published simultaneously in several languages past numerous Tolkien publishers worldwide, in the U.S. by long-fourth dimension Tolkien publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

"The Fall of Gondolin" takes readers back in Eye-globe'southward history considerably earlier the most commonly known events in "The Lord of the Rings," and "The Hobbit," to an era when Sauron wasn't the great power of evil in the earth; his predecessor Morgoth and his fortress of Angband were.

Opposing him is Ulmo, a heavyweight Valar, the group who shaped and ruled the globe. Ulmo secretly supported the Elves.

Gondolin, the city of Noldorin Elves, was magnificent and undiscoverable by Morgoth'southward forces and therefore untouchable by him. It isn't a spoiler to say that the "Fall of Gondolin" is nearly the betrayal and discovery of the city and the war from Morgoth's armies in Center-globe'south Kickoff Age.

The content isn't completely new. There are chapters near these events in "The Volume of Lost Tales Part Two" as role of the History of Centre-globe books and parts titled "Of Tuor and the Autumn of Gondolin" in "The Silmarillion."

Tuor, is aided by Ulmo, who even appears to him from the sea — a moment that is famously the subject of notable  artwork.

It is Tuor and Idril who are some of the few to escape, with a young Eärendel, who eventually had two sons, Elros and the familiar Elrond, giving the tale a tie to "The Lord of the Rings."

The book is published to fit the look and style of the others in the great trilogy of stories. Information technology is edited by Christopher Tolkien and illustrated past Alan Lee.

it is also worth noting that this is one of the earliest tales J.R.R. Tolkien wrote. He chosen it, "the outset real story of this imaginary earth."

It may exist the last published.

The book is $30.00 in hardcover and is bachelor as an e-book.

Information technology's official…"The Autumn of Gondolin" past J.R.R Tolkien, edited past Christoper Tolkien, and illustrated by Alan Lee, is indeed being published. It will exist released on August 30, 2018. While rumored, the release still comes every bit a very welcome surprise given that many expected "Beren and Lúthien" to exist Christoper Tolkien'due south final release. "The Autumn of Gondolin" will be available in hardback, deluxe hardback, large print and e-book worldwide equally well as a companion Tolkien Calendar. The Guardian has a wealth of interesting background on the story. Further details besides every bit reaction can also be found at The Tolkien Society.
The Fall of Gondolin by J.R.R. Tolkien

From the HarperCollins Press Release:

In the Tale of The Autumn of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in the world. At that place is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast armed forces ability from his fortress of Angband. Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might simply to Manwë, chief of the Valar: he is called the Lord of Waters, of all seas, lakes, and rivers under the sky. But he works in secret in Middle-earth to support the Noldor, the kindred of the Elves among whom were numbered Húrin and Túrin Turambar.

Key to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, cute but undiscoverable. It was built and peopled by Noldorin Elves who, when they dwelt in Valinor, the land of the gods, rebelled confronting their rule and fled to Heart-earth. Turgon Rex of Gondolin is hated and feared above all his enemies by Morgoth, who seeks in vain to detect the marvellously hidden metropolis, while the gods in Valinor in heated fence largely refuse to intervene in support of Ulmo's desires and designs.

Into this earth comes Tuor, cousin of Túrin, the instrument of Ulmo's designs. Guided unseen past him Tuor sets out from the land of his nascence on the fearful journeying to Gondolin, and in one of the most arresting moments in the history of Middle-earth the sea-god himself appears to him, rising out of the ocean in the midst of a storm. In Gondolin he becomes slap-up; he is wedded to Idril, Turgon's daughter, and their son is Eärendel, whose birth and profound importance in days to come is foreseen by Ulmo.

At last comes the terrible catastrophe. Morgoth learns through an act of supreme treachery all that he needs to mount a devastating attack on the city, with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. After a minutely observed account of the fall of Gondolin, the tale ends with the escape of Tuor and Idril, with the child Eärendel, looking back from a cleft in the mountains as they flee south, at the blazing wreckage of their city. They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Eärendel, which Tolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this volume from other sources.

Following his presentation of Beren and Lúthien Christopher Tolkien has used the same 'history in sequence' mode in the writing of this edition of The Fall of Gondolin. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, it was 'the commencement existent story of this imaginary world' and, together with Beren and Lúthien and The Children of Húrin, he regarded it equally one of the three 'Keen Tales' of the Elderberry Days.

Yesterday saw the publication of a new volume – but non a new story – by J. R. R. Tolkien. About a century after the Professor first conceived his tale of immortal beloved, Beren and Luthien has been edited by his son Christopher, and illustrated by Alan Lee. Information technology is published in the Great britain by Harper Collins, in the US past Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and in multiple languages by different publishers beyond the world. Harper Collins tell us:

The tale of Beren and Lúthien was, or became, an essential element in the development of The Silmarillion, the myths and legends of the First Age of the World conceived past J.R.R. Tolkien. Returning from France and the boxing of the Somme at the end of 1916, he wrote the tale in the following year.

Essential to the story, and never inverse, is the fate that shadowed the love of Beren and Lúthien: for Beren was a mortal man, but Lúthien was an immortal Elf. Her male parent, a great Elvish lord, in deep opposition to Beren, imposed on him an impossible chore that he must perform earlier he might wed Lúthien. This is the kernel of the legend; and it leads to the supremely heroic attempt of Beren and Lúthien together to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, chosen Morgoth, the Black Enemy, of a Silmaril.

Alan Lee'due south beautiful back comprehend illustration

In this book Christopher Tolkien has attempted to extract the story of Beren and Lúthien from the comprehensive piece of work in which it was embedded; but that story was itself irresolute as it developed new associations within the larger history. To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, he has told the story in his father's own words by giving, kickoff, its original form, and so passages in prose and poetry from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed. Presented together for the beginning time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in upshot and in narrative immediacy, that were afterwards lost.

The publication comes ten years later on the concluding Middle-earth piece of work of Tolkien's to come to press, Children of Hurin. You lot can read more about this new release here. We'd love to read your reviews – share your thoughts in the comments below!

2014-12-04_11-41-45_255Today we received official word from Tolkien publishers (in the USA) Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: x years on from the concluding Eye-globe related Tolkien publication, there will exist a new book for fans of the Professor to enjoy!

Here'southward what HMH say in their official press release:

'RETURN TO MIDDLE-World FOR HOUGHTON MIFFLIN HARCOURT

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has acquired the U.S. rights to publish BEREN AND LÚTHIEN by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien and illustrated past Alan Lee, in May 2017.

Christopher Tolkien explains:

'The tale of Beren and Lúthien was, or became, an essential element in the development of The Silmarillion, the myths and legends of the First Age of the Earth conceived by J.R.R. Tolkien. Returning from France and the boxing of the Somme at the end of 1916, he wrote the tale in the following yr.

'Essential to the story, and never changed, is the fate that shadowed the love of Beren and Lúthien: for Beren was a mortal man, but Lúthien was an immortal Elf. Her father, a keen Elvish lord, in deep opposition to Beren, imposed on him an incommunicable task that he must perform before he might wed Lúthien. This is the kernel of the fable; and it leads to the supremely heroic effort of Beren and Lúthien together to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, chosen Morgoth, the Blackness Enemy, of a Silmaril.

'In this volume Christopher Tolkien has attempted to extract the story of Beren and Lúthien from the comprehensive work in which it was embedded; merely that story was itself changing as it developed new associations within the larger history. To evidence something of the procedure whereby this legend of Middle-world evolved over the years, he has told the story in his begetter's own words past giving, first, its original course, and then passages in prose and verse from afterward texts that illustrate the narrative as it inverse. Presented together for the first time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in event and in narrative immediacy, that were after lost.'

Published on the tenth anniversary of the last Middle-earth book, the New York Times bestseller The Children of Húrin, this new volume volition similarly include drawings and color plates past Alan Lee, who also illustrated The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and went on to win Academy Awards for his work on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.'

The edition volition exist published in Europe by Harper Collins. Our friends at the Tolkien Society note that 'Beren and Lúthienwill be published 100 years since Tolkien'south wife Edith danced for him in a minor woodland glade filled with hemlocks in East Yorkshire, an upshot he later on best-selling was the inspiration for the meeting of the immortal Lúthien Tinúviel and the mortal Beren in the glades beside Esgalduin.'

You tin read more nearly this upcoming publication here. Mark the calendar – quaternary May 2017 volition non exist Star Wars twenty-four hours, simply Beren and Lúthien day!
